Fun New Photos

We’re mixing it up again! We loved last years full-body “formal” portraits by Jeanne Schnackenberg so much that we are keeping them, adding just a few new ones to the mix including more grown-up pics of Wu, Gravy and Bill. They sure are a handsome trio – with a mixture of ear carriages.

What we have got this year are new headshots of the team to use as their Dog Fan Club shot on each individual dog profile. Whitney McLaren, Yukon Quest photographer, came to the kennel during September and had some fun bringing out the personalities of each individual.

You’ll get to see all the new shots shortly once the Dog Fan Club opens on October 15th. Here’s a sneak peek at some…

Little Cloud is a dog you haven’t heard much about – Last season was quiet season for her and this year she is going to show us her stuff. Here she is peering into your soul to tell you to keep an eye on her this season.

Rodney is showing us his best ‘over the shoulder’ post practicing for the media attention he plans to garner this season.

Decaf is a loveable, talented derp and this pic really sums him up.

We decided to photograph our favorite couple – Olivia and Nacho – together this year. They spend every moment together and it seemed fitting to pair them for the photoshoot. It’s like a golden wedding anniversary shot don’t you think?

As always when photographing dogs there were some out-takes that made us laugh and these are just as good as the final product.

Waiting for Freeze Up

It’s winter. It’s not. It’s winter. It’s not. As some dog mushing outfits begin to enjoy snow and sled travel, we are still waiting. Two Rivers has been tucked perfectly between ‘Winter Storm Warnings’ for weeks. To the north of us – in the Brooks Range and far
ther up – it is winter; and to the south of us – in the Alaska Range – the snow has been falling in heaps. Here we sit… STUCK IN THE MIDDLE. Regardless, we are getting lots of Pre-Winter projects complete. That’s the plus.

Earlier this week we had a long day of dozing the yard. We rented a tractor with a box blade, moved every dog house and every dog, and smoothed out the entire area. The dog houses were pressure washed and scrubbed of any old straw or bedding. New name plates are in the works.

As anyone who has a curious canine knows… dogs love to dig. Digging is an SP Kennel summertime passion. Every year, just prior to freeze up, in order to limit the number of human twisted knees or broken ankles, we fill in all this wonderful dog landscaping. No more: holes, ditches, bath tubs, canals or treasure spots.

The challenge now is that we now must wait for freeze up before we return the dogs to their homes. Why put Peach back when we know that she is going to try to dig to China or beyond? (We did tell Peach about the current state of affairs in Hong Kong and China, so she now has her sights on North Korea. We never said Peach was smart!) Anyhow, in order to stop the digging all together we have not moved anyone back home.

Waiting for freeze up.

So… where are the dogs?

As SP Kennel fans know, we have plenty of pens, the Dog Barn, and random spots here and there. So in other words… they are scattered. Gravy and Sanka are spending the week together. That’s a ying/yang duo as they skip and run around the front play pen. Bruno and QT are in the dog room… chilling out next to a half a ton of dog kibble. Burp. Scooby and Cayenne are doing laps around the pen in the ‘back 40’. Scooby is 5 to 1 on Cayenne by now. Chipper and Jefe were in a play pen together but Chipper’s ridiculous circling gave Jefe a migraine. Now Jefe is with Junior in another pen and Chipper is alone. (Please don’t feel sorry for her.) Champ moved into where Jefe was. Dutch and Violet run in harness during the day and play all night in the platform pen. Their wrestling matches are entertainment for the everyone. Mismo was with Junior but he wanted the couch, so that’s when Jefe moved in. Kodiak is by himself. He likes himself. Clyde, Chevie, Perky, Commando and Gold are in the dog barn. Decaf and Spark live on a wooden platform all the time and now they are joined by Amber and Cloud. Yay playmates! Bill and Wu are having tons of fun with their temporary platform buddies: Bronze and Nomex. Driver and Iron are in the back of the yard, near the forest. They bark at rabbits, grouse and other forest critters all day. Five and Razz are up near the house and go in and out of the basement to try and keep their paws dry. Rodney… poor Rodney. He is so hyper that we move him almost daily in order to keep the mud at bay. It hasn’t worked yet. Olivia and Nacho are in the Plaza. ❤️ It will freeze sometime and everyone will go home.

Thanks to the SP Kennel muddy mess crew: Doug, Karolyn, MaryBeth, Tom, Cindy and Padee!

Here is the “Muddy Mess” video. Allen proves that even if you haven’t lived in Arkansas for 30 years… you can still drive a tractor:

…They Just Go “On-By” Without Us

There is a saying: “Old sled dogs never die, they just go on-by without us”. Such is true for Biscuit. We lost Biscuit at the ripe old age of 13 after a short illness. In the days just before he passed away he was running in harness and was as vibrant and energetic as always, albeit a little grayer around the snout.

Biscuit was an SP Kennel All-Star dog. He was the very best wheel dog in the business and along with being a rough, tough sled dog he has a very sweet streak in his nature that meant everyone that met him fell in love with him. He was the original “scratch my butt” dog, a trait he passed down to his sons.

Biscuit’s genetics have been preserved in his incredibly talented and accomplished offspring in the Latino and Golf litters. His grandson, Gravy, begins his yearling season this year.

Biscuit’s death left a huge hole at the kennel. He wasn’t the biggest or loudest personality, but his strong, stoic presence is missed every day.

We want to sincerely thank Lynn Budzak who sponsored Biscuit his entire life. She continued to stand by him through his retirement years. Lynn was heartfelt in her sponsorship and meet Biscuit several times. She gifted us with this ‘Sled Dog Heaven’ painting in his honor. (See the wheel dog looking back?) It stands alongside many of the trophies that Biscuit earned over the years that he raced. Also a big thanks also to all his Dog Fan Club members, you chose a good one to support!

Read his All-Star induction article here where we attempted to tell you all about how awesome Biscuit was. Truly a great ‘good boy’.

Retirement in all its forms

Each year we retire dogs from the kennel for various reasons. Our philosophy of “the right home for the right dog, at the right time” drives every retirement decision.

Retirement can come in many forms for an SP Kennel sled dog. It might mean staying at the kennel and becoming a mentor to the young dogs while living your last days in Two Rivers with Aliy and Allen. Or it might mean retiring to a forever home of kennel friends who have fun, recreational dog teams. That way these SPK dogs will run in harness and have fun, but not race competitively. Or, it might mean flying to New Zealand, France, or the East Coast USA and sleeping on a couch and cuddling with your ‘new people’ for the rest of your life.

This year we have retired a number of dogs.

Here they are:

Chena

Quest champion and all-round star lead dog Chena decided she had enough of racing. As talented and strong as she was, she lost her enthusiasm at the end of last season and while she still pulled hard and achieved lots, we decided that her lack of pep meant that she wanted to retire early. Chena’s race history includes three Iditarods, one Yukon Quest championship, last year’s YQ200 and two YQ300s, three Copper Basins 300s, the Nome-Council race and several local Two Rivers 50/100/200s. That’s a lot of racing miles under her harness and a number of them in lead.

Chena has gone to live in the Adirondacks with Chemo and Outlaw, both former neighbours of hers from the yard. She will enjoy bossing the two boys around in her Life Part 2.

Thank you to Margaret and Alfred Wirtenburg who sponsored Chena since she was a puppy, and all her Dog Fan Club fans.

Barista

Barista, one of the coffee litter pups, has also called it a day at SP Kennel. Her racing history included one Iditarod, the Northern Lights 300 and several of the Two Rivers Dog Musher’s Assoc (TRDMA) local races. She was always full of energy, chasing her tail, playing with neighbour Perky or barking at phantoms and ninjas during the night while the rest of us were sleeping.

Barista spent some time at the end of last season with Pete, a local school teacher who runs a small recreational kennel in Two Rivers. He and his family fell in love with Barista so this summer they have adopted her proper.  She will get to lead his small dog team on the Two Rivers trails. See you out there Barista!

Thank you to Barista’s devoted sponsor Wendy Brott, and to all her fans.

McCaw

Much like his namesake – McCaw has now retired from the big time. He has gone with Barista to live with Pete in Two Rivers. McCaw, although still quite young, turned out not suited to years of long distance racing. He is such a big fellah who would pull very hard, almost to the extreme, and tire his ‘draft-horse’ body out. He raced in one Iditarod, the Northern Lights 300 and the Percy DeWolfe Memorial Mail Race over in the Yukon. He’s also a YQ200 champion and has a couple of the local TRDMA races under his harness.

Special thanks to Fiona Campbell Trevor, McCaw’s sponsor since puppyhood, and all his fan club fans.

Ginger

Sweet Ginger has flown to her new forever home. Her race history is not as extensive as her burly brothers but she contributed her best in some big races. She had one Iditarod start, a Copper Basin and YQ300 along with several local races.

Ginger was always too glamorous to be a sled dog. She is gentle, petite and gorgeous. Where better for such a glamorous girl to live but PARIS? Yes, that’s right – Paris, France. Ginger has gone to live with Sheila who has spent time at the kennel for the last few seasons. When not at SP Kennel, Sheila lives in Paris. She absolutely fell in love with Ginger from the first moment. Au revior Ginger girl – you’ll be the talk of the town.

Thank you to Ginger’s sponsor Frances Sherertz and all her fans.

Felix

With a Quest championship and three other top three finishes, five Iditarods, Kobuk 440, five Copper Basins, three Yukon Quest 300s, the Sheep Mountain 300 and four TRDMA local races under his harness, Felix is the most experienced dog to retire from the kennel this year. Felix decided it was time to call it a day on running 1000 miles.

Felix is such a friendly fellah to go with the immense talent he possesses. He would run the Yukon Quest then curl up in your lap. Felix has gone on an excellent adventure and is in New Zealand now, and has been reunited with his buddies Waylon and Torch. He made the trip over the ocean with Daisy (see below).

Danielle Carver sponsored Felix since he was a puppy – special thanks to her and all his fans.

Daisy

Daisy was one of the unluckiest dogs at SP Kennel with regards to ill-timed happenstances. She never got to show us her full racing potential. She does have one each of Iditarod, Yukon Quest, Copper Basin 300, Yukon Quest 300 and Percy DeWolfe 210, plus eight locals TRDMA races on her resume.

Daisy made the exciting trip with Felix to New Zealand and is reunited with her brother Torch and uncle Waylon. She is always about fun and speed so will “rark up the Kiwis!

Thanks to Paul Stout, Daisy’s sponsor and all her fans.

Moira and Lydia were able to catch up with the entire SPKiwi recently at a dog race in Central Hawkes Bay, New Zealand. Check out this gallery of amazing pics by Teresa Angell who was the official photographer at the event. The SPK Southern hemisphere pups: Waylon, Torch, Daisy, Felix and Lydia.

Prata

Despite superior genetics, Prata unfortunately never realised her full potential. She is a real fire cracker, a pint sized, 36 pound sparkler and a mini-me copy of her momma Quito. She wasn’t able to channel her endless energy with much focus but certainly livened up the yard and training runs with her playful nature.

Prata is living locally and enjoying being the centre of attention!

Lynn and Tina Owsley sponsored Prata, thanks to them and all her fans.

Tinder

Tinder has gone to live with Willie and Bean, who retired last year, in Fairbanks. Tinder has three Iditarod and four Copper Basin 300s under his harness and was a talented sled dog. Niggling injuries kept him from really shining as bright as he was able so he’s been enjoying running the local trails with his buddies. He needed worry about training for a 1000 mile race these days. We get to visit him now and again and he’ll always say hi. Bark! Bark! Bark!

Many thanks to Marilyn Cozzens who sponsored Tinder enthusiastically and visited with him annually from his puppyhood until now. Plus thanks to all his Dog Fans.

Izzy

Beautiful Izzy is an extremely talented and accomplished sled dog. With four Iditarods, three Yukon Quests, Copper Basin 300s and YQ300s plus the Percy and three local races, she has achieved more than most. She became a momma last season and sat out the racing part of the season, enjoying shorter runs with the “oldies” for much of the winter.

Izzy has moved out of her accommodations at SP Kennel and is now living with Allen’s daughter Bridgett and her family. We felt that, due to her non-racing status last season, she didn’t get the attention she deserved so she is now enjoying family life with the Watkins’ and relishing the spotlight. We will miss her.

Thanks to the Clark Family and Chaya Zawadsky, Super fan Debi and all her dog fan club supporters.

Lydia

You all know the story about Lydia. She is now happily settled in New Zealand with Moira and her family.

Lydia has in her CV two Iditarods, three Copper Basin 300s, a Yukon Quest 300 and is a YQ200 champ. She also ran in the Nome Council 200 plus six local Two Rivers races.

Thanks to the Chaffin Family – Jake, Sarah, Loren and Polly – for sponsoring Lydia, Mark and Linda Wardell who sponsored her for the first few years and to all her dog fans.

You will receive, in the mail, this season’s unique membership Certificates featuring a photo for Black Team by the Seth Adams from Allen’s Yukon Quest 2019 Eagle Summit climb. The unique membership Certificate for Red Team Members features a photo by Julien Schroder as Aliy summits the final hill on the Iditarod, Cape Nome. Both fantastic shots! Thanks to Seth and Julien for allowing us to use these images. We know that the 2019-2020 Team Members will appreciate the magnificence of these images.

As a Red Team member you’ll receive a 15″ x 18″ ‘Adventure Awaits’ Tote Bag as a thank you for joining – featuring another fantastic pic from Julien as the team headed towards Nome. You will get an email .pdf copy of Aliy’s 2019 Iditarod Trail Notes. They are a long read! Black Team members will be sent a 8.25″ x 5.5″ SP Kennel multi-purpose zippered pouch featuring a quote about what we believe is the definition of a dog team. Use it to carry your device chargers, as a cosmetics bag, a pencil case or your snacks for the road. We’ll pop some other Black Team surprise goodies inside for you to enjoy.

You can upgrade your membership of either team to include the iconic red beanie.

All our Red Team and Black Team members that join before March 1st will also be sent a collectors postcard from Nome with the official ‘End of Iditarod Trail’ postmark – although don’t expect that before summer (see story here).

THANK YOU ALL This is the beginning of a fantastic season!

———————————————————————-

The Dog Fan Club will open October 15th. You will be able become a fan of your favourite dog, or dogs, and your name will feature on their individual athlete page. You also go in the draw to win great prizes throughout the season. We’ll let you know once it is open.

Note: We are in the very fortunate position that our dog sponsorship program is full and every dog has an individual sponsor. Many of our dog sponsors have been with us for the duration of their dog’s career and some before that! Thank you to all our dog sponsors. We do appreciate you and consider you part of the SPK family!

We are OPEN!

If you still see Maintenance Mode when you pull up the website, make sure to clear your browser cookies! You can learn how to do that by using this link: https://www.allaboutcookies.org/manage-cookies/clear-cookies-installed.html

It seems that SP Kennel website maintenance is taking longer than expected… imagine that?! We need to push the virtual “sled up the hill” a little farther before we are “over the top”. Give us a little more time to get our huskies in a row and we’ll have much more content, videos, photos and fan opportunities SOON!!

Thanks, Aliy

SORRY… Website Down 😕

SORRY…

We will be shutting down the SPK website for a short time.

We are prepping for the New Season with fantastic videos, photographs, stories and dog mushing tales (tails).

2019 Aliy Cam: Episodes 25 and 26

In Episode 25 you first find the team only 7 miles from the finish line. We had just descended Cape Nome and are traveling on the flats along the Bering Sea. The second half of this episode is only 3 miles from the finish. It is incredibly exciting to reach this spot on the race trail. We are almost there! Spectators are super excited and many are standing along the trail cheering from 3 miles out until the finish line.

Julien Schroder was on the Cape when we climbed and summited it. He took some fantastic photos of many of dog teams just miles before Nome. Here is his website.

In Episode 26 we can taste the finish.

For the many years that I have mushed to Nome, rarely has the ocean looked like this. As you can is not frozen. A few icebergs are floating in the foreground but it seems to be the perfect synopsis for the 2019 Iditarod. Warm temperatures, wet conditions and challenges in every direction.

The entire SPK crew greeted me, Dutch, Mismo, Spark, Violet, QT, Bruno, Rodney, Five, Nomex, Jefe and Decaf at the finish line. Here is the video:

I THANK YOU for following my team along on the Iditarod trail. My 2019 Aliy Cam series are now complete. Feel free to watch any or all of the videos again. I’m sure that I will. They bring back incredible memories. Our 1,000 mile journey was truly an accomplishment.

For a more in depth look into my 2019 Iditarod adventures, I have written detailed Trail Notes. An electronic copy will be available to anyone who joins my 2020 Red Team.

Want to really be part of the team?

SPK Season Opener is October 1st!
