There is a saying: “Old sled dogs never die, they just go on-by without us”. Such is true for Biscuit. We lost Biscuit at the ripe old age of 13 after a short illness. In the days just before he passed away he was running in harness and was as vibrant and energetic as always, albeit a little grayer around the snout.

Biscuit was an SP Kennel All-Star dog. He was the very best wheel dog in the business and along with being a rough, tough sled dog he has a very sweet streak in his nature that meant everyone that met him fell in love with him. He was the original “scratch my butt” dog, a trait he passed down to his sons.

Biscuit’s genetics have been preserved in his incredibly talented and accomplished offspring in the Latino and Golf litters. His grandson, Gravy, begins his yearling season this year.

Biscuit’s death left a huge hole at the kennel. He wasn’t the biggest or loudest personality, but his strong, stoic presence is missed every day.

We want to sincerely thank Lynn Budzak who sponsored Biscuit his entire life. She continued to stand by him through his retirement years. Lynn was heartfelt in her sponsorship and meet Biscuit several times. She gifted us with this ‘Sled Dog Heaven’ painting in his honor. (See the wheel dog looking back?) It stands alongside many of the trophies that Biscuit earned over the years that he raced. Also a big thanks also to all his Dog Fan Club members, you chose a good one to support!

Read his All-Star induction article here where we attempted to tell you all about how awesome Biscuit was. Truly a great ‘good boy’.

  • So sorry for your loss. Biscuit will never be forgotten. He was an amazing sled dog, he has passed it down to his kids.

  • Love, Love, Love Biscuit! He and Tatfish were the original reasons I became interested in SP Kennel.
He definitely passed the ‘butt scratch’ gene to his daughters too. Wedgy reminds me of him whenever I look at her (and especially when she turns to present her rear for scratching). If you dare to ignore it she will whip her head around and back her rear end up to your hand as if to say, ‘can’t you take a hint?’
Biscuit was one of a kind and I’m happy he lives on in his kids and grandchildren.

  • So sorry to hear of Biscuit’s death. No doubt he was the best wheel dog ever! A huge hole but it
sounds like he did not suffer. Just another bit of the heart gone to doggy heaven. I truly believe
we all will see our pets someday also. My Sympathy to SP Kennel.

  • When I didn’t see his picture and profile I wondered. That is such a lovely tribute to a beautiful boy, Lynn❣He so deserves to be an SPK All-Star🌠Biscuit will be missed 🐾

  • A very nice tribute. So sorry for this loss at SP kennel! It sounds like he leaves a strong legacy! Condolences!

  • Biscuit was the best. I count 14 years young (his birth date was listed in the link above as “Sept. 2005”)

I recall thinking, when Chena ran in lead with Chemo at times in the Nome-Council 200 a few years ago, that the team ran ever so fast to make it to the halfway point and win the “Half-Way Award” especially for Biscuit (who was at home).

What was the prize? A golden tooth (donated in the name of a Nome dentist).

    WOOF!!!

  • So sorry for your hearts. Biscuit is a huge hole but maybe he just missed Quito! Hope that Decaf can half fill those wheel shoes.

  • Biscuit definitely earned his spot in the All-Star Hall of Fame!

When I visited two years ago he was looking as young as Felix. I had a hard time realizing I was looking at Biscuit, who had clearly already earned his retirement. He clearly had a blessed retirement at SPK.

He had an amazing life, accomplished so much, made some super athletes for SPK with his sweetie Quito, and was, and still is, admired by so many of us.

  • Oh Aliy and Allen, I’m so sorry to learn of Biscuit’s passing. It’s SO obvious how much you loved him. I wonder if the Rainbow Bridge is on the heavenly Iditarod Trail because he’ll surely be there waiting for your command. <3

  • So sorry for your loss, you all care so much for your dogs, that is what I love about SP Kennel. I think Dawn is right he just missed Quito. Biscuit buddy have a great next journey of your life, we will all see you again one day!

  • My heart hurts for you guys. Don’t tell Chipster, but her father Biscuit was my favorite of all SPK 4 legged athletes. I was so fortunate to have met him. He had the best life!! He and the other SPK pups that have gone over the rainbow bridge will be surrounding and watching over you in all you do!

  • My heart is so sad about Biscuit, he was a fantastic dog. I recall getting to give him several “butt scratches”. Truly on of a kind! My heartfelt love & HIS legacy indeed lives on.

  • I’m so sorry for your loss. He was such a beautiful boy. Rest now dear Biscuit.

  • I am terribly sorry to hear about this. Biscuit was a wonderful dog who is seen everyday through his pups. I see the resemblance of him when I see pictures of his pups. There wouldn’t have been a better place for Biscuit to call home than SPKennel. I am very sorry for your loss.

  • So sorry that you lost a member of your family. I know you love each and everyone of them deeply, but this guy was something else. Wasn’t it Biscuit that Allen put into lead over American Summit one year? I remember feeling surprised, but strangely happy.
