Aliy wanted to let you all know she’s doing alright. She saw a doctor on Wednesday for her shoulder injury and had multiple scans done. Luckily it does not require surgery. It may take some time to heal but she should recover pretty well in time.

She does have a sore head though. Head injuries like these do take time so she is taking things very slowly for the next few weeks. Of course that is frustrating but she’s taking time out to focus on getting well. She’s pleased to be home and is looking forward to having her team back at the kennel.

She appreciates all your messages, and the love and good vibes being sent her way.

The dogs are still in McGrath enjoying the hospitality of all the vets and volunteers at the checkpoint. We likely won’t see them until the end of the week but we’re confident they are being well cared for. Aliy had sent plenty of dog food and snacks to the checkpoint in drop bags. We’ll update you once they are on the ground.

  • Good news on the shoulder not requiring surgery. And yes I’m sure taking it slow is hard when you have been going full speed ahead for a few weeks. Hang in there Aliy.

Great photo of the team and Mismo 😂. In your day two re-cap you mentioned Mismo being sensitive to the Vet handling his feet. I noticed that too in the live feed and at first thought he might be injured, but then Aliy left with all 14 dogs so I knew he was okay. They all have their little quirks.

Thanks for the update. Hopefully the dogs will be home soon.

  • Update much appreciated. Have been VERY worried, anytime concussion and major impact are in the description it translates to a horrific scenario. Now along with many others wishing you a full recovery in the near future. When your teammates are back at the kennel their love and admiration will lift your spirits immeasurably. ❣️

  • Good News but serious and I know you will beat it with love when your team mates arrive home! I am sure they are wondering where Aliy is for sure! Miss my butt rub!!!! And kisses from Sweet Violet!! Take Care Aliy!

  • Aliy and Allen,

Thank you for giving this update! So glad you don’t need surgery, Aliy. What a time you all have had! Glad you are hunkered at home waiting the rest of your family to arrive. They’ll be so happy to see you! And vice versa.

Time to practice turtle energy. Going slow to achieve success! Aliy, sounds like your shoulder and concussion will mend on turtle time. But hurray hearing your prognosis for recovery!

Our prayers and love from Cincinnati as you navigate your way forward.

  • Dear Moira, Thank-you for doing a great job as SPK’s Director of Communications. I really enjoy your wit and humor. I also respect your grace and directness when making a difficult announcement.

  • Addendum to earlier post. Allen, you must be extremely relieved to have Aliy at home. The anxiety, anguish and panic upon learning of Aliy’s accident had to be almost unbearable until you were able to see her again. I am sure your loving care will greatly improve her recovery time. Please take care of yourself also.

  • Thank you for the update….so glad to hear no surgery needed on the shoulder….a big relief!!! Head injuries are no joke…no doubt it’s hard for her to still her mind….my guess is she will be able to relax more once the Team is HOME with her.

  • Happy to hear you are going to be ok. Will continue to pray for a complete and speedy recovery! Hugs from Colorado.

  • Dear Moira, thank you for your updates and honest grace in sharing this information with us.
Aliy, so grateful that you do not need surgery but head injuries take a while to heal. Take the time you need to rest and heal. I know that’s going to be difficult but you can do it with your great support system at home and all of your fans sending love your way.
Glad for the dog update too! Sorry they are still out on the trail but I know they are being watch over by excellent vets and volunteers.

  • Ally, I was so hoping this was your year. God is maybe suggesting that #50 may be the one! No, recover, heal, rest, eat well. Hopefully next year we can see you on the trail interviewing and cheering your friends on! You are such a special part of the Iditarod family. Prayers for you, your family, and your kennel. Thanks for being such a wonderful example of strength, and dignity! You are awesome! God bless! Gail (alaska born)

  • Ditto to everything everyone has said above.

  • Aliy, I am glad to hear that you are slowly returning to normal. I am just sad that you didn’t get to share the finishing line with Dallas but you gave this sport every single ounce of yourself. I am so inspired by your courage and despite your serious injuries that you were able to make it to the next trail point. A truly amazing act of courage and strength. Never underestimate the power of women to accomplish great things.
