What’s ahead this Season?

We find ourselves in a very interesting position this mushing season. As many of the faithful SPK fans from years past know, we have dedicated incredible time, effort and resources into producing one of the very best, well respected sled dog kennels in the world.

Over the past 10 years, Aliy and Allen have built up SP Kennel to where it is today – always looking at the future as well as racing in the present. This can be seen in SP Kennel’s strategy of racing: “Give every dog a chance to race as much as possible in order to train for the future.” Traditionally, we decide what races are on the calendar for the season and then determine how many teams to enter in each. Often we raced two or three teams per event. We would choose a “winning team”, then choose a “junior varsity” team and, if possible, choose a “novice” third team. This strategy set us up to where we are today. And as we gaze out at the Alaskan Huskys at SP Kennel, we see that we have reached the future.

The dogs that we are training this 2018-2019 Mushing Season are experienced veterans and many of them are champions. 90% of these SPK dogs are Yukon Quest and/or Iditarod Veterans as well as experienced on numerous 200 and 300 mile races. Only four dogs currently in training have not competed on a 1,000 mile race team. However, three out of four of these dogs have raced in 200 and 300 mile races. This is an incredible percentage of experienced, knowledgeable, dedicated sled dogs. In years past, we have never seen such percentages. (These calculations do not consider the three yearlings who were puppies and not old enough to compete last season.)

The final 2018 -2019 Dog Roster on this website will be finalized on October 17th when the new Dog Portraits are posted. We will have a detailed Retirement Post soon after, so you will know where all the retirees now reside.

This season, the SPK strategy of racing is changing. This 2018-2019 Mushing Season we are refining and focusing. What does that mean?

All of this means that we will be focusing on just “the winning team”. We will have one team in the Copper Basin 300, one team in the Yukon Quest, one team in the YQ300 and one team in Iditarod. These four teams in four races will get all the SP Kennel focus and energy. It is an exciting change for us. We have been close many times before to “winning it all”! This season, with the incredible dog talent and focused musher dedication, we believe we have that chance in 2019!

Preparing for Freeze Up

Even though snow has not fallen in our neighborhood, we anticipate winter sooner than later. There are many, many chores to be done before the snow and ice covers the land. One of the biggest “To Do’s” is the – Dog Yard Dozing Day. We try to limit it one day so that the following day each one of us can give our aching backs a day off. This year we might have ‘hit the nail on the head’ as far as timing the bulldozing and freeze up.

Big holes, little holes.

As any dog owner knows… digging is a passion, sport, hobby and even competition for some dogs. Several of our huskys are hole specialists. Some of their holes are landscape architectural wonders. Frank Llyod Wright has nothing on the amazing 4 foot deep, slightly angled, wide pit that Cloud made in order to store her precious chew toys and bones. The front Play Pen boasted amazing tunnels and holes with several ‘floors’ connecting to other rooms.

Hidee holes.

We try to not be bothered by these ankle breaking, dish stealing, puddle creating masterpieces during the summertime. We cautiously step around them because one slip of the foot could be a rush drive to the ER (it’s happened before.) But now that the yard is a bustle of activity and people and dogs are walking to and from their houses constantly – avoiding these hazards is impossible. That’s when Dog Yard Dozing Day arrives.

  1. It needs to happen when the ground is not saturated with water. Muck!
  2. It needs to happen when the ground is not yet frozen solid. Impossible!
  3. It needs to happen when the ground will most likely freeze very soon after. Pointless! Because the dogs dig even more enthusiastically in fresh dirt!

So last week we rented a tractor, Allen fell back into his country Arkansas roots and jumped on board for a day plus of dozing, box blading and refilling holes. At the same time we had some hired muscle show up at the kennel. From Upstate New York, ‘Adirondack Arms’ moved nearly 50 dog houses over to the ‘Patriot Fan’ pressure wash area. All the houses were cleaned of this summer’s dirt and grim. We fixed all of the houses in need of repair and will paint a few more this coming week. Older or chewed on dogs’ name plates will be replaced and rotten dog dishes were removed. Then every house was wheeled back into the yard, filled with this season’s fresh straw.

The dogs are moved away from their houses and out of the yard. At SP Kennel we have quite a few larger Play Pens and several smaller pens. In addition, we have 18 stalls in the Dog Barn. Every dog was moved from his or her spot and enjoy the afternoon playing with friends and family.

Dutch, Lydia, Nomex and Violet hang out. Cloud and McCaw buddy up.

In addition to the yard, the dog barn was cleaned out and and readied for the coming winter use. WOW! SPKennel looks like a brand new place. And lucky us… the temperature dropped to 10 degrees Fahrenheit two days later!

Felix doesn’t recognize his house!

Junior Pups head to New Homes

The Junior pups reach the 8 week old milestone very soon. Their new parents are as excited as can be to have their new family additions. Four of the pups left the kennel today and two more leave on Monday. The remaining two will be future SP Kennel Racers.

Here is the last video of the litter together. We will post photos of our SP Kennel pups on Monday.

Izzy Pups take on the World

Okay… these seven cute fur balls aren’t quite up to a Big Adventure, but they are thinking about it. They are 3 1/2 weeks old and starting to explore. Mama is not happy with that and tries to carry them (by the tail) back into the house. Izzy has had a crash course in Motherhood and so far, has done her best.

Season Opening – Join Our Team

As October rolls around, so does our official “Season Opening”. We’ve refreshed the website and today is also when we open our support programmes – and thank you all from the bottom of our hearts for choosing us. It is perhaps an overused saying but it really does take a (rather large) village to enable us to do what we do, and everyone who supports us in any way is an integral part of our team. “Thank you” doesn’t seem like quite enough.

We have three different ways you can support us this season. You can join the Red Team, the Black Team or the Dog Fan Club! Please note the links at the top of the page.

Red Team and Black Team membership is open TODAY. Members will find their name under the Team tab at the top of the page and will receive the new season’s membership certificate, once again featuring images from Julien Schroder of arctic-mood.com. As a Red Team member you’ll also receive a cool ball-cap as a thank you for joining. Black Team members will get a handy and attractive SP Kennel notebook.

The Dog Fan Club is open as well. You can become a fan of your favourite dog, or dogs, and your name will feature on their individual athlete page. You also go in the draw to win fabulous prizes throughout the season – last year we gave away posters, race guides, race memorabilia and other topical prizes. Choose one dog or fifty, it’s up to you.

All our team and dog fan club members that join before March 1st will be sent a collectors postcard from Nome with the official ‘End of Iditarod Trail’ postmark.

Note: We are in the very lucky position that our dog sponsorship program is full and every dog has an individual sponsor. Many of our dog sponsors have been with us for the duration of their dog’s career and some before that! Our philosophy of each dog having only one sponsor (or sponsor family) means we now have a long waitlist of people wishing to sponsor an athlete. Thank you to all our dog sponsors and those patiently waiting on the list. We do appreciate you and consider you part of the SPK family!

Website Facelift on October 1st!

The SP Kennel Mushing Season begins on October 1st. The dogs have been training, the mushers are getting fit and our Red and Black teams have signed up for races. What this all means is that our fans now need to get involved! But the SP Kennel website needs a facelift first. So on September 30 it will be out of commission – don’t log on until the next morning – and when you do, everyone will get the chance to see some new photos, blurbs and memberships.

“Join the Team” – both Red and Black will then be available. We have new team mementos including a very snazzy SP Kennel Red Team 2018 Ball Cap.

Our most popular program, the Dog Fan Club, will also open October 1st as well. Browse through the brand new Fan Photos and choose your special dog or two. Sign up, via the instructions, and your name will be published on our new site under the photo of “your” dog. Regularly throughout the season, we will have a random drawing from all of the Dog Fans. The winning dog will get some extra treats – courtesy of the SP Kennel Dog Fan Biscuit Bucket. The winning Fan will receive a “glam shot” of their dog plus an SP Kennel prize.

The “Dogs” page is being reworked now. All dogs who have retired from SP Kennel and moved to new homes have been taken off the page. We were repeatedly asked to list who are siblings, so these are now included on each individual Dog Page, as well as Race History and a new blurb. Dog Fan Photos from this summer have been posted beside the Portraits from last season. Our Portrait photographer comes to the kennel on October 8th. These new Portraits will be on the website in the middle of October. What does Razz look like now? Is Prata any bigger? Has Nomex head shrunk? All these questions will have to wait.

Training in Two Rivers

Yes! We are actually training here in two Rivers as well as traveling around the state! Here is a fun video from Aliy took this morning with: Mismo, Perky, Ginger, Lydia, Daisy, Bruno, Felix, Violet, Scooby and dirty-faced Cayenne.

Anchorage Heart Walk

What a great event! The Anchorage Heart Walk was today in downtown Anchorage. Literally thousands of people and hundreds of dogs did the 5 kilometer Walk in the name of Heart Health Awareness. Some people walked as heart attack/ stroke survivors, some walked in memory of family members with heart ailments, some people walked to support a team, company or individual who is passionate about the American Heart Association.

Allen, Aliy, Quito, Scruggs, Chica, Malibu and Scout walked for many of the reasons above. A SHOUT OUT to Matson for being a principal corporate supporter of the event. And a huge thumbs up to our very good friend, Kenny Gill, for making it his mission to inspire Heart Health in Alaska and energizing the Matson Relentless Force Team. As a survivor, Kenny personally raised over $24,000 for his inspirational Heart Walk after 25 months ago checking into Queens Medical Center on the verge of a massive stroke. WAY TO GO Kenny!

What we enjoy more than anything is getting out into the Alaskan community. Thank you Alaska for being so supportive of Aliy, Allen and the SPK sled dogs! Our five dog team of huskys – Quito, Chica, Scruggs, Scout and Malibu – pulled a real dog sled (on wheels) with either Aliy or Allen riding and the other leading the route. The team walked in and around hundreds of people and dogs and enjoyed every moment. Thank you all for the greetings, the cheers and support of our mushing endeavors and the many “offers” for dog loans for next’s years Iditarod and Yukon Quest. We will take all of these offers and suggestions into account: Yes… every corgi, pitbull, retriever, golden doodle , mastiff, cocker spaniel and chihuahua. We love all of your dogs and you never know who might be helping the SPK next year!

Of course a huge thanks to the dogs on the SPK Matson team today. Like always… they did all the work. All five of these dogs are retired from racing. Scout and Quito live at SPK in Two Rivers. The other three live in homes in Anchorage. Chica lives with Leslie and Don, Scruggs keeps a close eye on his Mom, Barb and buddy, Molly and Malibu takes very good care of Mary-Beth and a couple cats. Linda and Midnight were the SPK Crewing Crew. Thanks to all.

What a day!
