Bib Draw

Last night, the SP Kennel crew and other sled dog fanatics made their way to Iditarod Start Banquet. And for any Iditarod musher, the night was filled with mingling, talking, and poster signing with the exception of the bib draw.

Aliy was one of the first mushers up to the podium, drawing number 18! This is a great starting position, so we couldn’t be happier. Shortly after, it was Allen’s turn. As many of you may remember, Allen has had terrible luck at the bib draw. In both the Copper Basin and Yukon Quest, Allen drew the second-to-last bib, but last night, he was feeling lucky. And sure enough, Allen whipped out number five!

Get ready for the start-
Aliy #18
Allen #5

Woohoo!

Congratulations Bonita!

Bonita is one of the rock-stars of SP Kennel, but that doesn’t keep her from being a bit of a Barbie doll. Bonita is known as the playful ditz, high-stepping her way down the trail, so it’s a good thing that teacher Barbara Boucher has signed up to be her ‘tutor!’ Barbara, also known as Mimi by her three granddaughters, will be in Anchorage for the Teacher’s Conference at the Iditarod start, so Bonita looks forward to seeing her there!

Thank you Barbara for sponsoring Bonita’s racing season!

Congratulations Spicy!

When Vivian and Greg Martin came up from Georgia for the Iditarod start, they came across the SPK crew through mutual acquaintance. Both the dogs and the SP K attitude had them hooked! Shortly after, they were introduced to Spicy, or Spi-CEE as she’s affectionately known, through the “Meet the Dogs” Series. They knew that they had to sponsor her!

Unfortunately, Vivian and Greg won’t be at the Iditarod start this year to cheer Spicy on, but hopefully she’ll see them in years to come!

Thank you Vivian and Greg for supporting Spicy’s racing season. Go Spi-CEE!

How Healthy Are These Dogs?

With the Iditarod fast approaching, it’s important that each of the dogs are healthy and fit as possible. However, we can only tell so much from running the dogs and thoroughly looking them over. That’s where the Iditarod vet checks come in.

Last Tuesday, all the dogs took a trip to the vet to have their blood drawn, EKGs performed, and microchips checked/implanted. Once collected, the blood is sent to Providence Laboratory in Anchorage where -after over 15 tests-technicians and medical technologists analyze the results. The veterinarians consider each individual dog’s age, sex, and blood results then alert us to any abnormalities. Luckily, the results come with a “blood test for dumbies” reference sheet so that even I have a general idea of the significance of a Albumin level of 3.1.

Rambler having his EKG test. Not all the dogs are as cooperative and lie still on the table.

Congratulations Raffie!

Raffie is one of the youngsters in the kennel, but he has already snagged an admirer. Jeff Buddington is one of SP Kennel’s biggest fans, and from the first time he saw Raffie’s picture, he knew Raffie would be a winner. At only a year old, Raffie is a big boy with lots of potential, so thank you Jeff for sponsoring Raffie!
