Allen has left Circle at 8:57 AM with 13 dogs and headed out onto the Yukon River during sunrise. The next official Yukon Quest checkpoint is about 170 miles away. It is the village of Eagle. There is one known cabin open to the mushers along the route: Slavens Cabin. After that he will be camping on the river.
Allen Through Central
Quito and Chica led the charge into Central with Biscuit and Pud in swing. As you can see by the picture, Chica liked her promotion and leading with her sister.
Allen had a brief stay at Central checkpoint, stopping only to fix a missing bolt on the break of his sled (broken on the descent of Eagle Summit), replace a few booties, grab gear and straw, and then back on the trail.
Allen is planning on camping between Central and Circle, so the dogs will get some quiet rest away from all the hubbub of the checkpoints. With the steepness of Rosebud and Eagle behind them, Allen and the dogs are looking forward to the upcoming runs.
Allen Through Mile 101
Allen left Mile 101 at 9:21 this morning after a five hour nine minutes rest with a happy dog team. They’ve been eating great and rested well, especially considering all the action at the checkpoint. True to the Quest, the run from Two Rivers to Mile 101 was no cakewalk.
Allen and the team navigated sloping glaciers of frozen overflow as well as numerous pools of wet overflow. Every musher into Mile 101 had wet clothes and feet. Even with the challenges, the dogs are looking spunky after the first 110 miles. Scooter is the only dog unable to continue due to a shoulder; however, judging by her twirling, screaming, barking behavior upon arrival at the checkpoint, you’d never know. I’ll have more shortly from Central checkpoint.
Here are a few pictures from the Mile 101 checkpoint. The weather couldn’t be better- gorgeous sunrise, warm temps, and no wind.
Two Rivers Checkpoint and Onwards
Allen came through Two Rivers checkpoint about 10:15 pm last night. He didn’t stay long, just passed through after camping a bit before the checkpoint. He looked well, and the dogs were rested and ready to run. It was a beautiful night, with a bright moon shining over the hills and mountains. The temperature hovered right around O degrees with a light wind. It was a great night to be out mushing.
The YUKON QUEST Start
How thrilling it was to be in downtown Fairbanks today! The streets were lined with people and traffic. It was a balmy 15 degrees below zero this morning, so the people of interior Alaska were happy to be outside enjoy the sunshine. It warmed up more towards the afternoon and literally, thousands of folks, lined the bridges, starting chute and river banks for the 2012 Yukon Quest International Sled Dog Race start.
