CB300 – Black Team Wrap-up

Allen is really proud of his team; they gave it their all and he could not ask for anything more. He said he always hopes to give it his all and when that all happens, no matter what place you come in, that all he could ever want. This year in this race it all came together!

QUITO – “There’s no quit in Quito”. She is as good as ever and for the last few seasons has been SP Kennel’s number one dog. She is a true professional and showed it once again in this race. She’s tough, smart and an extraordinarily talented sled dog. She ate snack after and snack after snack which helps her physically.

SCOUT – Allen needed another good leader to put up with Quito and chose Scout and he came through with flying colors. He was always steady, never complaining and got on with his work.

CHICA – at the last checkpoint when the team was getting to ready she was jerking in her harness to go. Allen said he’ll take a dog like that every day! She is very efficient with her sleep; she’s quick to lie down and late up. At one checkpoint she was still lying down at 4 hours, 59 minutes, 59 seconds and when Allen said “Ready?” she leapt up and took off!

BOONDOCKS – she is a little fireball that does not know she’s little at 36 pounds. As a swing dog her size helped with the water crossing as, if the team doesn’t want to go through it and the musher must pull and encourage the team to cross, it is easier to get a 36lb dog to follow you than a 70lb dog.

Boondocks and Chica

I.V. – she is enthusiastic and the team picks up on that, as the race progressed she even had more enthusiasm! Allen is proud of her loping the last third of the race which helped up keep their speed up.

OLIVIA – is and has been our regular leader but due to her being a little behind in miles Allen kept her closer to the sled so he could monitor her. As the race progressed with her he almost put her in lead but Scout was doing such a great job. She is back to herself and the 300 miles didn’t take any weight off her – she eats well!

NACHO – Allen said he sang the “Nacho, Nacho Man” song. He’s a brother to a Quito and Chica – that whole litter is awesome!

SCHMOE Dog – he was the vocal dog of the group, he got the other dogs energized. He was the cheerleader of the bunch from start to finish – when Allen asked “Are you ready?” he let him know he was ready!

Nacho and Schmoe

WILLIE – Willie normally is always loping and always strong. He suffered a minor injury where he pulled his right tricep a few miles from Lake Louise (Allen thinks he stepped in a hole) but the trooper that he is, he still was pulling up every hill. He gave it his all and Allen was sorry to leave him in Lake Louise.

PUPPET-Dawg – she is as steady as they come and loped the entire 300 miles. She never faltered. Allen and Puppet have a special bond.

BISCUIT – he is one of the oldest racing dogs at SP Kennel and has been on every “A” team for the last seven years. Allen said if we could have 16 dogs like him we would probably would never lose. It was fun to see him running with his son, FELIX, from behind you can’t tell them apart. It is good to see Biscuit, as he is coming out of his prime pass the torch to Felix as he is coming into his. We are happy that we’re going to have a younger Biscuit ~ in Felix ~ to continue the legacy for many more years.

Biscuit and Felix

Allen wants to thank to Zack Steer and his entire team, and especially the trail crew lead by Jamey Kemp for all their hard work. There was monumental amount of work done to the trail with snow conditions the way they were. It had snowed every other day leading up to and during the race and to maintain a 300 mile course took a lot of dedicated people. All the mushers see it and appreciate it.

CB300 Red Team Finish

Watch Aliy and her team of Scruggs, Beemer, Waylon, Clyde, Chemo, Mac, Sissy, Fang, Tatfish, Izzy, Tug and Rambler finish in 8th position in the 2014 Copper Basin 300. Don’t they look great?

CB300 – Finish in Glennallen

What an exciting race that ended up to be! We’re so proud and excited about the result and they way all our teams performed!

We understand the trackers were misbehaving so it must have been agonising for you all. I can tell you it was a nervous wait for Ray and I at the finish. Little whispers and murmurs could be heard amongst the crowd that gathered, speculating on what was happening and who would get there first. It was a feeling of relief followed by excitement as we recognised the team coming our way first.

As soon as they crossed the line and all the paperwork had been finished Allen was whisked away to the Old Paths Baptist Church for an interview with KCAM, one of the local ratio stations for an interview, and a couple of plates of chilli.

The dogs looked great; I know I say that a lot but the really did! They ate several snacks right there in the finish cute then we took them to the truck where they had a kibble meal before getting into their straw beds. What a team eh?

Aliy came into Glennallen upbeat and excited, as did her team. She was proud of all of them and she came over the line with Scruggs and Waylon in lead. If you check the CB300 race stats you will see that Aliy went over her mandatory 18 hours of rest. She was at Tolsona Lake Resort checkpoint around about the time Allen and Nic Petit were about to cross the finish line so she decided to stick around for a while, enjoy a tasty burger and embark her final run with the knowledge Allen and his team were the 2014 CB champions.

We have just returned from seeing Meghan and her Red and Black team cross the line. She really went for it from Tolsona hoping to make up a place which they managed to pull off in the last two miles. Her team finished looking strong and was lead by Ranger all the way! Apparently she was channelling Allen at the second Tolsona pass through: she stopped for two minutes, the minimum allowed as mushers have to sign in and out if they are “blowing through” a checkpoint, and started throwing out all unnecessary items in her sled to make it lighter! We’ve seen the strategy work so why not try it? I look forward to talking to Meghan about her race and I’m sure she will write a post to tell you all about her team of stars.

Thanks to the team at the Old Paths church who hosted the finish and had crock-pots of soup, chilli and home baking for whoever wanted to enjoy it. It was much appreciated!

Finally all dogs, mushers and handlers are either fast asleep or just about to… just as soon as I finish this sentence… Goodnight. You will hear from me again during the coming week when I get videos edited and uploaded and hear more of the stories from the trail but in the meantime: thank you for following along! It’s been fun; tiring but fun.

CB300 – Dropped Dogs #2

A quick update on further dogs that didn’t cross the line. They are still considered part of the team and the race is recorded on their race histories so even if they didn’t quite get all the way they made an important contribution.

Izzy finished the race in the truck. Izzy worked so hard and earnestly for Aliy that she just got dehydrated and started getting some muscle cramps at Tolsona. Aliy really wanted to take her all the way to the finish but she will certainly get more opportunities, she really impressed on her first real test.

Izzy and Outlaw

Meghan left Outlaw with Wes and Josh at Lake Louise. He was tired and didn’t look himself although there was nothing specifically physically wrong with him. Meghan trains Outlaw a lot and is quite fond of him so she can easily spot if something is not quite right with him. He ate a big meal later on and will enjoy his sleep tonight.

Again, a huge thank you to the vet team. You rock!
