I met Donna Dewhurst in 1990 in King Salmon, Alaska … a lifetime ago. Over the past 30 years she has become one of the best photographers in our great state. She has now retired from US Fish and Wildlife and decided to try her hand at writing as well. The combination of her photos and words can be seen in the March issue of Alaska Magazine in an article called ‘Born to Run’. The article spotlights three generations of SP Kennel dogs: from 13 year old Nacho, 6 year old Violet and 1 year old Gravy.

Hi, you probably get this quite frequently but, I am a teacher in Lee, Maine (a small rural town of less than 1000 people) at Mt. Jefferson Jr. High and am preparing a unit of study for my 8th graders on the Iditarod. I am wondering if there is a way to get the article Born to Run without purchasing a whole magazine subscription? Thank you
If there’s a bookstore nearby, it might carry -Alaska- magazine’s March issue; if not, you might be able to Email the magazine’s editors and ask for a copy. Hope that info helps! Aliy and Allen take phenomenal care of their dogs.
If your not finding one, email me and I’ll get one sent to you. Lisa

Congratulations to Donna on the publication and SPK for the feature. She obviously chose the best example for her article. Kudos!
Born to run, and it’s all about the dogs….absolutely….the mantra of SP Kennel!!! Thank you ChaCha, Oddball, Pingo, Quito, Nacho, Olivia, Pepper, Chica, Clyde……on and on and on….
Bet that is a great read! Three wonderful dogs and would love to hear what she has to say. Thanks
for letting us fans know!
I will definitely pick that issue up at the store!
I am watching the Insider Plus 2019 documentary. I was listening to the music and not watching right at that moment as they are moving along toward Rainy Pass and down the other side. Music is playing, no one is talking, and then I hear a familiar voice .. I looked up in time to watch the SPK team fly by with Aliy expertly riding the sled – as always.
Man, tears are in my eyes.
“The mushers center their lives around the care and well-being of these amazing athletes. Which they do so out of a total love for dogs.”
The parade of wonderful dogs we’ve cheered on through the years are my heroes.
Thank you so much SP Kennel for putting dogs first!!!
WOOF WOOF WOOF
Nice article. Just finished reading it. Lots of thoughtful care goes into the needs of these dogs. I wouldn’t expect anything else from SP Kennel. Enjoyed the comparison of the needs of the young, the actively racing and the retired.
