I have carried a hand held video camera on the race for years now. Honestly, I don’t always think “Gez, this is gorgeous… I need to take a video!” But, I really did try to capture some amazing portions of the Iditarod Trail this year.
There are 13 videos in the ID: AliyCam 2016 Series.

At this point in the race, my team and I are still sorting out the kinks. This is only our second run in and the sun had just come up. We were happy to see the greater depth of snow as we traveled towards the Alaska Range Mountains. The snow makes a sled dog team’s progression so much easier. We can safely travel with complete control of the sled. As well, the dogs can grab bites of snow whenever the feel a little thirsty. The entire team is getting used to the routine that we will follow for the next 8 plus days.

  • Incredibly interesting to see how the team travels over trail where there are moguls and dips.

    Have to say, I am newly up to something resembling Broadband speed, and watching these videos without taking hours for DL is quite intoxicating.

  • I absolutely will never get tired of watching these awesome dogs in motion, doing what they were born to do. And the lansacape is so beautiful with snow, trees & mountains in the background. I know I've said this about a thousand times, but it is so true!

    Even after watching/following several 1000 mile races (via the Internet), the endurance these dogs have still amazes me…and I would say the same of mushers too.

    You know…..when you gotta go, you gotta go, even when Aliy is filming. Good Dawgs!

  • I always love the Aliy Cam! I guess the old saying is right…"if you're not the Lead Dog the view never changes!" Correct me if Im wrong, but to me it sure looks like the wheel position is the most challanging! Good dogs!!! The front of the Team looks SO far away from the sled! Probably why you want some brains up there!

    LOL…a part of a plane???? Mountains are gorgeous! Thank you for sharing a glimpse of interior Alaska from the Mushers viewpoint!

  • Thank you for the video. Wow. For a while there it seemed to be up and down and up and down – moguls – like someone said. The dogs are amazing – and Aliy you seem to be always talking or commenting to the dogs….watching and saying affirmations … 'good dog', etc. How do you communicate with the leaders? They are so far away – so far up front in such a big team. Are the leaders so attuned to their names that you can call their name and a praise/kudos or a command like 'gee' or 'haw' and they respond? The biggest team I've ever run is 8 and I was terrified but the leaders knew their names and knew 'gee', 'haw', and 'whoa' and seemed to have incredible hearing and since the lead dogs were so good, I had an easy job. I can't imagine what it would be like with a team twice as long. Thank you so much for sharing – can't wait to see more.
