This season we have made an investment safety.
Safety in Mushing is something we don’t think about until “something happens“. But, in our world of: wilderness, physical challenges, extreme temperatures, environmental hazards, lots of dogs and independent (sometimes unpredictable) mushers, there is one thing we can guarantee: Something’s gonna happen!
This week, after our first “Safety Meeting” of the season, we decided to start carrying our DeLorme InReach satellite communicator. We can easily toss this small device into the sled bag or parka pocket of a musher who is headed out on a training run. There are options on the device that can allow a person with internet access to track the location of the device and thus, the musher and team. There are also options on the device for “Come Get Me” and “Everything is Okay”. Of course, it is rare that one of us would be sitting at the kennel, just twiddling their thumbs, watching SP Kennel dog teams trot down the trail on the internet. But, stranger things have happened!
Allen took the Sat. Communicator in his parka pocket. This is halfway through the run.
Technology these days is incredible and dog mushers are using it as well as the rest of the world. This device would obviously not be allowed on a race. But, most races these days use tracking devices and technology of their own.
What are the circles along the route?
I think that is very smart! Even though there is usually not someone at the kennel just twiddling their thumbs whatching the tracker, at least if someone does not show back up at the kennel after training there is a device to check their status. I needed that on my kids automobiles when they were in their teenage years and just started driving.
Peace of mind is priceless, so happy you are taking advantage of today's technology to ensure the safety of SP's athletes.
Love the tracking devices. Your safety is IMPORTANT to all of your sponsors and fans. After you've done more trial runs with this equipment, please share the internet links with your dedicated sponsors and fans!
This device looks to be like Ruth says priceless. Especially with
moose and other creatures in the woods. Safety and health of these
dogs and mushers are #1 for us fans!
Safe Travels!
We actually have a mobile life alert device that tracks anywhere in north america and the service will contact people you list with them or 911 if you need help
I have a SPOT satellite communicator and it's a huge piece of mind. If I want to stay and fish in a remote Adirondack Pond a bit longer I just hit the "ok" button that sends the message "Having Fun" to Elizabeth so she doesn't worry. So if your having an awesome run and want to push it a little further and longer, no more having to get back at a set time…just push a button and mush on! Enjoy the peace of mind SPK!
While I understand the rationale for devices not being allowed in actual races at least you do get to carry the GPS so you can be found. These for training and even going out camping are a godsend and I think anyone going out in the woods or desert should have one! It is so easy to have an accident and you could lie out there alone until the buzzards or the wolves found you! I am very glad SPK is taking advantage for the mushers and the dogs!! Smart move and we all applaud. You all matter very much to all your fans and friends here!
Great idea. Safety is so important. Thanks.
Such a happy news report! Thanks so much!
Might as well take the best of the modern trends and tricks and make them work for the athletes of SP Kennel!!!
Love the use of G.P.S. and U.S.G.S. data – woof, woof, woof!!!
We made use of this device 3 weeks ago when my friend and I fell through the ice whith our dogteams. We were met by rescue teams and are all safe. Regards from Tonje
Glad ya'll are doing this!
