What an evening it has been. To be able to virtually watch, in real time, the team going up and over Eagle Summit is quite something. There is always a sigh of relief once they are heading down the other side. Thanks to the team at Trackleaders for the technology!

Aliy and I watched the team go over from the lounge at home, along with ChaCha, Bullet, Tig, Ranger, Tina, Charlet and Rambler. Meghan, Mark, Bridgett and Scotty were waiting it out at Mile 101 checkpoint.

Ranger helps me press refresh

The Black Team arrived in Mile 101 at 10.26pm and stayed just a few minutes for Allen to get supplies from his drop bags and snack both himself and his team. They left Mile 101 in first position with 13 dogs. They are now on the trail towards Two Rivers where they have a mandatory eight hour stop. This next section of trail goes up and over Rosebud Mountain. For more information about the trail ahead (and indeed, the trail behind) check out the Yukon Quest Mushers’ Guide to the trail.

We have a long night of tracker watching ahead of us!

  • thrilled that Allen's commitment to the race plan and running his own race has put him in such a good position – even more thrilled that he still has 13 fleet footed athletes with him – GO BLACK TEAM!

  • Watching these two teams on the river last night, I have to say, this is not what I would have expected. Did I expect Brent to slow down – sure. Did I expect Allen to gain on him by going faster – sure.

But did I expect today to hold the drama it did – to the degree it did, not even a smidgen.

  • Nearly 4 am here in the Adirondacks…..time to put the coffee on and get back onto the arm chair musher runners…13 SPK Canine Athletes and Allen are 30 some odd miles to Two Rivers…Brent 2 miles behind….yup, I'm awake now!! GO SPK!!!

  • Nerve wrecking!!! Incredibly well executed climb!!! What stars of the sport Allen and the Black Team are! Admirable!!!
And, they are ahead of everybody else in the race!!!
    Go SPK!!!!

  • 1 mile separates them. Been hitting refresh all night as I sit and do paperwork. What a race! Go Black team!

  • A tremendous race between two great teams (4 legged and 2 legged). And all this after 900 miles of tough trail.

    What a finish!!

  • OMG, OMG, OMG!!!!!!
I came home from work this morning, and saw Allen and Brent both in Two Rivers, and I checked the Current Standings Page, and

    WOWIE ZOWIE!!!!!!!!
Allen arrived two minutes before Brent into Two Rivers, WOHOO!!

    Allan, Allan, Allan!!!!

They could not script this any better than the real deal.

I am so excited I don't work tonight. No sleep for me 🙂

I hope the Black team and handlers are catching some winks. What a night it must have been.

    WOOOOHOOOO SPK Black Team.
    🙂

  • Awesome performance into Two Rivers, Allen! Get a great rest with the team and kick a** all the way to Cushman St. –Cliff Michel & Family

  • Wow, Allen & team. Great strategy for the race. Keep on mushing after your 8 hr stop into Fairbanks. Go SPK.

  • Allen and the dogs are quite the example of determined discipline. What an exciting turn of events for my morning check in. Okay, so the human is a part of the dog team, hence the reference- The Black TEAM. Great consistent, persistent effort! So exciting to "watch". Thanks for the view.

  • What a surprise this morning. It is a great reminder to never give up! Go Black Team and Go Clyde!

  • Had to see what I missed last night…
I watched the replay on the GPS tracker. It looked like Brent was within 1000 feet of Allen before they went up Rose Bud. Allen and his team left them in the dust on the uphill. Pretty phenomenal considering Allen didn't stop at mile 101.

It's going to get extremely exciting in about four hours!

Rest up Allen and pups, you're gonna have some fun.
    Woohoo!

  • Up, up, up and over indeed!!!

The best part has been watching the poor "tracker" to see who is in front, which team has the lead.

And it was Poquita by a nose to the waypoint!!!

Holding one's breath is an Olympic sport for SP Kennel fans!!!

  • I am in awe you guys. 10 hrs behind two days ago. That is what determination, knowledge, and love for the dogs can do. One dog dropped after 900 miles is unheard of. Go Black team. There is none better right now. Whoot, whoot!

  • I am so so excited for Allen and his team! I went to sleep with him still giving chase and was thrilled to wake up and see he had moved into first. Wow! It isn't over til it's over but I know the team will finish strong! Cheering loudly from Seattle ! GO ALLEN GO!
