We are just minutes away from the 2014 Iditarod Ceremonial Start!
Mostly for reasons of keeping the dogs’ power under control, each team will consist of only 12 dogs for the Ceremonial Start, rather than the full complement of 16 dogs who will start the actual race tomorrow.
In addition, each team will pull two sleds with mushers and IditaRiders on board. Even with all that weight, the dogs will be so amped up that it will still be hard to keep them under control!
The SPK Red Team will start with Aliy at the helm and Meghan on the tag sled. Allen will skipper the SPK Black team with Moira hanging on for dear life behind him.
According to Iditarod rules, the 12 dogs that run the Ceremonial Start may only run for the same musher in the race. So, although there are still a few roster slots up for grabs, this will give you a pretty good idea of what the final teams will look like:
This Iditarod promises to be as exciting as ever and always… Stay tuned!
Good Luck SPK teams!!! Be safe!

What super teams. All the best SPK. Be safe & enjoy the trip.
With all the hype about Sorlie and other former champions, who would have thought that Aliy might have some serious competition from her own Kennel!
Seriously!
If I didn't know that Allen's goal will likely be make sure Mismo, Felix and Izzy know how to get all the way to Nome, I might be worried.
Such a wealth of talented dogs!!!
Amazing SPK all the way!
I can hardly wait to find out the rest of the team members tonight.
Thank you for this great post. One thing I noticed was how great your dogs behaved and ran the ceremonial start! They looked like a well oiled, synchronized, beautiful unit!!! Those dogs and their Mushers are a work of beauty, Heart and excellence!!!
Godspeed and well being for the Mushers and the beautiful dogs at SP Kennel!
Thank you crew and handlers for keeping us updated and for your care of the dogs!!!
Good luck Red and Black Teams! Thanks for explaining the 12 dog ceremonial start versus the 16 dog restart team for the official start…..I thought the teams looked "short"…..thanks for the explanation!
Go Red! Go Black!
