Allen is on the couch and the dogs are in the basement. This afternoon is one of rest and relaxation.
MALIBU
DINGLE & MEG
QUITO & BEEMER
The Black Team came in to the Yukon Quest finish line with Dingle & Quito in lead, Meg & Olivia, Nacho & Rose, Biscuit & Malibu and Boondocks in the rear. Chica was riding in the sled bag for the last hour. Allen said she really got a belly ache the last few hours so he thought giving her a ride would be best.
The team was healthy and happy for much of the race. They did not eat as well as expected at Chena Hot Springs Checkpoint and several dogs got belly aches on the last run to the finish line. We think perhaps they picked up a virus right near the end.
The dogs dropped from the race were: Scout in Dawson, Rambler in Slavens, Beemer in Circle and Viper in Central. Scout looks good and has been outside playing in the pen. His shoulder muscle seems to have loosened up. Rambler is sassy. He has stayed inside the house for several days – getting into much trouble. His shoulder muscle seems to have loosened up, but we’ll have to watch it. Beemer has an infected front tooth that needs medical care. We think this affected his over all attitude (a tooth ache at 50 below would do that to ANYONE!) Viper was simply tired and he has rested inside on a dog bed since he left the team. He’ll need to gain some weight and simply rest.
So, all in all, we are very happy with the SP Kennel Black Team!
A speedy recovery for all those hard working dawgs has been sent off from Montana.
yeah. look at beemer. ears back: you can see that he does not feel good.
a congrats to the black team! well done!
Ditto! From Connecticut, where the snow this winter prompts me to think about SP Kennel 4-legged team members!
Woof! Great job in lead, Dingle!
Thanks for all the great coverage throughout the Yukon Quest. You have lots of followers cheering on the SP Kennel teams.
Glad all the dogs – and Allen!- get a chance to rest and relax before the big Iditarod adventure.
What an great race! Thanks for all the updates! I love all these dogs and mushers! You are all simply awesome!
Educate me please. How do you know when a dog has a belly ache?
Does Beemer tend to overachieve? Everytime I see him post-race it appears like he has left EVERYTHING on the trail! So proud of Beemer's work ethic!
Saw Ryne's video of her race. Looking at the race through her eyes, a relatively new musher, was very interesting. Her blog entry was very interesting. Hope all is going well in your preparations for the Iditarod. Will be interesting to see which race (THIS YEAR) Alan thinks was the "toughest" as both races have claimed to be the "toughest race on earth".
