Hopefully, the race has given SP Kennel an indication as to the dogs that will be on the A and B teams for the Iditarod.
Congrat's to the Red Team for a job well done!
The dogs were — as always — the major topic at dinner last night… The mushers were very, very happy with the dogs and extremely positive about what they were able to test/prove with some of the youngsters… In that respect alone, the DD was a total success for SP Kennel.
Hi Mac ~ Great race coverage!! We are wondering about the dogs in Aliy's sled. Who was in there with Betsy and why? Is riding in the sled something you have to "practice" with the dogs? I can't imagine them wanting to ride while their team mates are out running.
Hi Lynn — The other dog that Aliy carried — only a few miles from the finish — was Newt… He's a young dog who just got tired. Aliy tried to "pep him up" for a while to give him a chance to finish, but he just wasn't going for it. Since she was still "close racing" three other teams for position, she decided to give him a lift in the basket.
No, riding isn't something the dogs have to practice… at least not that I've ever seen/heard… Basically, if a dog "needs" to go for a ride, he/she is quite happy to curl up in the parkas, sleeping bags, etc. then ride in comfort and style.
