With two teams full of rookies — yearling dogs with no racing experience at all — Aliy and Bridgett have started the Two Rivers “Tune Up” race. Although the distance is very short — only 20 miles — it’s still a good chance for yearlings to get some valuable first experience in what it’s like to be around other teams at a race start. Waylon and Lester — seen here with Bridgett — behaved as prime examples of yearling dogs: Loud, unruly and even a bit crazy. With a little guidance from the mushers, however, they all got to the starting line and away in proper order.
They both had a few experienced dogs on their teams of eight, and you can see that Aliy has wisely put hers up front. Bullet has her head down and focus straight ahead, while Butter and Teddy show their experience by looking both ways before crossing the road.
Bridgett had elegant Petunia in lead and powerhouse Tony in swing. With beauty and brawn like that, she’s got a good chance of getting where she needs to go, and in a hurry too!
We’ll post an update on the “tune up” results later today!
