It seems there was some major weather happening outside of Shaktoolik today with huge snow drifts and strong winds. At one stage there were about 25 teams stacked up at the checkpoint waiting for it to be safe to continue on. If you see the tracker you’ll notice most of the teams are in groups; this will be for safety and to share the trail breaking duties.

Allen left Shak with all 14 Black Team mates at 8.01pm and is currently about 30-35 miles from Koyuk. They spent over 16 hours at the checkpoint. We did pack plenty of dog food in the drop bags so they would have been just fine for that amount of time.

We will be anxiously watching the tracker tonight until they all get safely into the next checkpoint.

Drop Dog Update

All our dropped dogs: Outlaw, Nelson, Driver and Sissy are out at our good friend Margie’s kennel in Knik. Here’s some pics from earlier today.

  • Thank you Margie for taking such good care of the SPK athletes super stars).
Watch out, I think Outlaw is telling Molly how cute she is.

  • Thanks so much for sending along these pix of the "dropped dogs" – considering how fond his Uncle "B" was of Molly, perhaps Outlaw is passing along a few special words for her from The Beemer?

  • Safe travels to Allen and the Black Team!!! Good thing the mushers are traveling in groups. They can keep track of each other and avoid getting off track !!!!
Allen must be relieved to learn that Aliy and the pups arrived in Nome safely and in great condition!!!
The dropped dogs are living 'the life' in Knik!!!
    Love you all!!! ❤️❤️❤️

  • Thanks for the Black team update, watching the finish and wondered what was going on. Thought gps was lagging and off again. Heard Northern lights were spectacular so hope everyone had that to enjoy. Love that all Iditarod teams work together despite the fact this is a competitive sport. So Great!

I love all the pics of Driver. I have been in heaven throughout the race. He really makes me laugh.

  • Thank you Margie!!!

Driver should be so proud of himself. Sissie and Nelson look as if they missed a great party – they'll have to wait a bit to celebrate with the rest of the Red Team.

Love the pic with the back-seat serenade!!!

    Best,

    Margaret
