Getting to the Koyukuk River Championship Race in Allakaket was not an easy task. It took two days, a dog truck, two humans, fourteen dogs, a dog sled and a snow machine to reach the starting line. Getting there was truly an Alaskan Adventure in itself.

Very nice video. I liked the story you told with the videos. I didn't know you had to go by dog team to get to the village. That means they can only get out via dog team or snow machine. Thanks for sharing!
Funny to actually get to SEE the dogs pick up the pace when they see the village….all their little ears a' flappin'. Normally we only get to read about that :o) Gotta love them doggies :o)

Cracked windshields were commonplace when I lived in Alaska a dozen years ago. People don't worry about it much up there. Lots and lots of roads are not paved. And the winter plays havoc on the ones that are paved, which means much road construction in the summer months. I've driven that road many times. Sure do miss it.

Brings back good memories. I first met Aliy in Bettles mushing for Sourdough Outfitters (Dog Squaw and Slacker!). Great weather for an "afternoon outing." Good fortune and have fun!
When traveling Outside, like I just did to PA, people are always interested in our lives, but the one thing that they don't really get is that some villages are only reachable by snow machine, plane, boat or dog team.
I barely get it, since I live in the second largest Alaskan city. I have wanted to have some insight into just this experience.

The only thing I can say is:UNBELIEVABLE!!! The dogs sure loved it when they got to mushing, they aren't the only one, so did I!!

What a great video. SPK dogs alway seem so happy & excited to be mushing. Their time in the race was fantastic. Those trucks are so scary, not a lot of room to pull over. Aliy the picture of you & your "native mother " is so wonderful. What a beautiful adventure & great scenery.
