Those of you who were with us last year may recall that our drive to Anchorage was an 11 hour ordeal of blizzards, slick roads and just about everything Alaska can throw at a road trip. We are delighted to report that our drive this year was just about the opposite: Clear, mostly dry roads with no hassles and no delays. We left the Kennel at 7am and “dropped” the dogs by the roadside for a potty break at about 11am.

Then it was just another 4 hours to our destination at the Clarion Suites Downtown where we “dropped” the dogs again and gave them a hot meal.

Within the hour now, we humans will head over to the Mushers’ Banquet for — among other festivities — the bib number drawing. Stay tuned!

  • good luck everyone in getting an early start number 😀 it must be hard on the late start numbers to have to wait all day to get going, happy to hear it was a nice drive as well.
Good luck an god speed on the rest of the trail.

  • Aliy,
I drew your name for the iditarod thing we are doing in class. I really wanted you too!
I found your website and have been on it nonstop ever since.
I hope you do good in the iditarod. I am rooting for you.

  • I'm glad you had great road conditions this year.
Will there be a guard for the dog trucks during the night while in Anchorage?
I so much wish I could be there to experience the excitement.
To dogs and humans …. Have a great race!

  • Best wishes for a successful 2010 Iditarod for the Red and Black teams and all their wonderful support personnel! You all rock!

  • I wouldn't say there will be a "guard" on the dog trucks, but we've got 4 handlers who will be on pretty much constant rotation throughout the days/nights… Plus, the dog trucks are right outside our hotel windows, so we'll hear them if there's anything weird going on…
