In yesterday’s segment of Aliy’s interview, she talked about the Yukon Quest. So, I thought this might be a good time to share with you an episode from our “Training On…” series which Aliy recently filmed on a local portion of the Yukon Quest trail.

Sadly, some parts of the audio are a little challenged. There’s some wind noise in spots, which seems to happen when there’s a head wind. I’m still trying to come up with a solution for that. Then, there are some “loud mouth dogs” in the soundtrack, about which there’s nothing that can be done… Although you will hear Aliy try!

  • Do you ever run into teams running the other way? Even when you describe trails as heavily traveled, it always seems like you have them to yourself.`

The trails seem so narrow, I was just wondering how you would handle an encounter.

  • Believe it or not, Jude, we frequently "run into" teams running the other way… Our dogs are well trained to move to the right and pass other teams without problem… So are most of the other "pro" teams around the area… It's usually no problem… We just pass "on by"… Some of the "recreational" teams are not quite so well schooled and there can be mix-ups… But if you get the dogs moving fast their instinct will mostly keep their momentum going forward… If you hesitate… Oh brother… It can be a mess.

  • Mac, re the wind noise– I think it might work to run the video through an editor that does audio and either mess with the portion of the sound spectrum that the wind falls at, or try the built-in noise reduction function. My first try would be with Audacity (Windows, freeware), FWIW–select the windy bit, effects–>noise reduction.
