Besides being an all-around fantastic sled dog here at SP Kennel, Spicy has just become our first “corporate sponsored” dog!

Last year when the folks at Freeds read that Aliy was giving up her beloved coffee for racing season, they sent her some of their Energi Tea to try. She likes it very much, and drank it both throughout the season and into the post-season while mushing up in the ANWR on Natural Extremes adventure trips. This year, they said they wanted to do more with the Kennel, and we suggested they sponsor Spicy in honor of her name’s reflection of their tasty tea. They were thrilled with the idea and have “signed” Spicy to a long-term contract!

What’s even more fun is that they’re going to enclose Spicy’s team card with their mail order shipments, so she will become famous with a whole new audience! Although our Dog Sponsor program has traditionally been one of individual participation in SP Kennel — and in the lives of some very special dogs — we’re delighted to now open up this program to “corporate” sponsors as well. If your company would like to leverage the fast-growing popularity of sled dog sports, why not sponsor one of our fantastic canine athletes! Just email us — SPKDogLog@gmail.com — and we’ll help you pick the perfect spokesdog!

  • Don't feel obligated to post this – but dang, Mac – you're rapidly becoming the best pitch-man since Billy Mays. Way to go!!!

  • Why did Aliy give up coffee for the racing season? I might have to try some of the tea, as I am a coffee addict myself!

  • Hi Emily — Aliy gives up coffee for racing season for a number of reasons… One is that the caffeine interferes with her already chaotic run, rest, sleep cycle. Another is that coffee really dehydrates you, which is a double problem up here in the arid climate AND with all the exertion during racing… It can cause really bad cramps… Allen is already off caffeine and alcohol… Third is that in the hectic schedule around the Kennel, none of us needs more "jitters"… Basically, as much as we love coffee, it's not a useful part of a sports regimen! Definitely try the tea… It's low in caffeine — not entirely caffeine free — and it's got great "stuff" for the body!

  • I LOVE the picture of Aliy on her make-shift stool, pouring her tea with Spicy looking on and that beautiful expanse of nothingness in the background! What a great picture! Where was this taken? Up in ANWR? If so, where?

Congratulations on the corporate sponsorship! I'm going to buy some tea just so I can get Spicy's card! What fun!

  • Yup… The photo was taken at base camp in the ANWR… One minor correction: The dog "helping" is Hoss… Acting in his capacity as canine majordomo… One of his last official duties prior to his retirement!
