Allen and his team of 12 SP Kennel dogs have pulled out of the Solstice 50 Mile Race this weekend. He injured his big toe while driving a sled. Originally we thought he had broken his toe, but after x-rays, it’s been determined to be “Turf Toe”. This is a sprain of the ligaments around the big toe joint. It’s caused by jamming the big toe or repeatedly pushing off the toe forcefully — sound like running up a mountain along side a dog sled? Yup!

The Copper Basin 300 Mile Race starts in only 23 days. There is plenty of time to rest and recuperate the toe. But, that means sitting out the ‘Season Opener’. So, SP Kennel will only have two teams in the event this weekend. We are sorry to sit the 12 dogs out of the race, and they would probably do it with out a musher, but they will have to hold out for the Copper Basin 300.

As you can see… we think the dogs are READY to run!

  • Best wishes to Allen for a speedy recovery. So sorry that he and 12 of his buddies can't run in the race this weekend. Scout sure does stand out as an island of calm in all of the mayhem. I'm sure he is having fun in his own way.

  • It is amazing how a a toe injury can affect the whole body, especially Turf Toe. Hang in there Allen. Scout's attitude just cracks me up!

  • So sorry to hear about this injury and a team not running. Maybe this is a superfluous suggestion : have a sports physiotherapist tape the joint in order to help those overextended / micro ripped ligaments and have the tape stay on for 2 week periods. This will make it inhibiting to "wiggle" your toes to keep warm and through the races this is extra attention taking. Faster healing is promoted as well by 'Trameel', a Homeopathic ointment and/ or pills, just as with dogs joints… Send all my best wishes and thoughts to Allen for healing and wish I could run those dogs!!
    Love to SPK
